Massively.com Interview

Massively.com posted an article about MechScape GDC09: What Jagex has in store with MechScape. Check out the interview below.

GDC09: What Jagex has in store with MechScape

We’ve been hearing some new info this last week concerning Jagex and their latest MMO project. The company has enjoyed wild success so far with their free-to-play browser-based MMO RuneScape, and they hope to replicate that success with their sci-fi project entitled MechScape. We had the opportunity to sit down with a few members of the company’s top development team for an interview during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco to discuss this new project and the current state of the company.

So what is MechScape? Well, first off, it’s important to note that MechScape is not the game’s name, only the project’s code name. It is a sci-fi MMO project that has been in development since 2006. Although it will be running on the RuneScape HD engine, Jagex is very determined to point out that this game will not simply be RuneScape in space. It will have its own mechanics, its own storyline and a planet-based, non-linear game experience unlike anything they’ve tackled before.

When the project was first conceived, the team started out by analyzing the current sci-fi MMOs and discovering why they weren’t truly successful in the market. They discovered that these games were nothing more than fantasy mechanics dressed in a sci-fi wrapper. Having a set of skills that you level up through grinding is basically a fantasy mechanic. So from here they identified what game mechanics make a good sci-fi game, and they’ve developed most of these as completely unique features that have never been seen in any MMO before. Of course any real details on that are yet to be announced.

The game centers around the tension among four distinct species, each with their own look, abilities and back stories. Throughout the game, players can choose their alliances, which shape the path of their adventure. There are hints of cloning, player-built vehicles and even spaceship building eventually.

One of the greatest advantages Jagex has with this new project is the experience behind the team. With RuneScape boasting 150 millions users since their launch in 2001 (and the Guinness World Record for the largest free-to-play MMO in the world), they’ve had the chance to learn from their experiences, both good and bad. While each development team has their own core developers, the technical side of things are run by the same folks, allowing them to learn and grow together. In fact, RuneScape’s newest HD launch was made possible by the advancements in MechScape.

In addition to MechScape, Jagex is enjoying what may turn out to be a great year for the company. RuneScape is still played by over 5 million players a month and their gaming hub FunOrb is constantly gaining new hosted games.

We look forward to hearing more details on MechScape and what Jagex has up its sleeve to keep the largest free-to-play MMO so wildly popular.

I hope this helps you with your mechscape research!

Jagex is going to livejournal

jagexsocialIn a recent post on RuneScape Reader’s Digest: Jagex is going social Vaskor pointed to the new Twitter and Facebook accounts of Jagex. These places are great for finding RuneScape community updates. If you want to visit events make sure to keep an eye on the Official Jagex Twitter account.

Even more recently Jagex started a LiveJournal account, which you can find here. It’s basically has almost the same stuff as the Facebook and Twitter accounts. But sometimes it contains some nice new information which you can only find there or you might just like the livejournal system better than the other ones. I’m only not sure how they’re going to do it when MechScape is released. Since it might be annoying to see MechScape stuff at the same place as the RuneScape stuff.

Anyway there is sure some interesting stuff coming from Jagex lately, they are really opening up to the community.

Mechscape Races

Of course you know that mechscape will have humans, but did you know that it will have other playable creatures. Such as the Pliigi. The pliigi is the only confirmed one at this moment, but there are topic’s arising of another “Mortiga” race.

Pliigi Concept Art

Proof of Pliigi
2ed9
You can see that the Pliigi look like an organic race, made up of monster like flesh, with of course monster skin (green like a goblin), But they look like a strong built race, if you look at the form of the legs and arms on both types of pliigi.

Mortiga Concept Art
mortiga_400x274

You might have noticed that the “Mortiga” have no head, thus this tells you it’s control mechanism or brain is somewhere else, most likely the “Core Orb” or the red orb in the center of it. You can also see the “Obsidian Like rock” (black rock above the feet area.) So that confirms that obsidian will be in this game.

Who knows maybe there’s even more species or “races” in mechscape that we don’t know about, but we will just have to wait and see.

MechScape Beta

If you’re wondering if MechScape will be having a Beta than I got the answer right here. MechScape will have a beta, this has been confirmed by MMG. This beta will be members only for RuneScape members, I’m not sure if FunOrb members are able to join, I will try to get this infor but I think I won’t be able to. Please note that when there is a beta it will be on http://www.mechscape.com, no where else! So keep your password safe and don’t enter your password on other sites than runescape.com, mechscape.com, jagex.com or funorb.com. If you do think you’re at the true beta, just make sure to check out the official website of Jagex at jagex.com.

MechScape - This isn’t related with RS at all, but I decided to post it anyway. MechScape has been confirmed to be sci-fi and another MMO. It will be a member’s only beta for the first few weeks after launch, RS and MS will have linked names - so you can’t get rares names!

Mod Stevew on MechScape

modstevewEdit: On the original source a discussion has started about the validity of the image. Since the hitpoints and prayer of the image have been altered. Also no other images like this have been popped up so there is high doubt that this image is actually real.

Mod Stevew was spotted on the MechScape servers a few days ago by a player on the Zybez Mechscape forums. Take a look at the topic here: Mod Stevew Logged In On Mechscape!

This could mean that MechScape is near to the release and also proof that it’s actually going to be called MechScape and not Stellar Dawn. Ofcourse it’s still possible that MechScape is just there as the name of the test server to protect the actual name of the game. Then the question still remains what Stellar Dawn is going to be, we can only wait until more information is known.

Full credit goes to basilm21 on Zybez, so make sure to check out his topic: Mod Stevew Logged In On Mechscape!

MechScape is Stellar Dawn?

stellardawnJagex released a press release today, officially announcing MechScape to the press. Even though the press release doesn’t really carry any release date for MechScape. It does contain one very interesting line.

The game — under the code name MechScape — has already generated significant buzz among gaming enthusiasts

They are referring to MechScape as a codename and not as the actual game name. Which is something that is possible since Jagex also owns a trademark for Stellar Dawn. I think the name is a lot better than MechScape to be honest, MechScape sounds too much like RuneScape in space. Jagex doesn’t want that, so they might have decided to change the name. Since the trademark application Stellar Dawn has always been discarded as a FunOrb game. But not every FunOrb game has been trademarked or had their domain registered. If it will be Stellar Dawn or just MechScape is something we will see in the future.

Interview with Jagex by MechScape world

Exciting news over at MechScape World they’ve had an interview with Jagex Head of PR, Adam Tuckwell. It provides some info about MechScape, it’s nothing really big they’re coming with. The most exciting bit is I think the poster which they got from the MechScape staff.MechScape Poster

1) The biggest question on everyone’s mind: When is MechScape coming out? If you cannot answer this, then what are the signs we should look for that MechScape is coming soon?
Adam: Sadly we are keeping the answer to that very close to our chest. In truth we want to get the game launched when it is ready, polished and full of compelling content to keep everyone busy. We know that there is a lot of excitement about the game and it is really great watching the excitement grow. The player anticipation is a real motivator for us to release the best game that we can.

2) We’ve heard from Mod MMG that there will be a race of pliigi. What other races may there be, and how many of them will be playable?
Adam: Certain elements of the game are a closesly guarded secret. I can’t confirm anything right now, but we will be passing more information soon.
(Note: There will be playable races and Pliigi will be one of them. Adam was unaware of what Mark said the other night as he was traveling.)

4) What do you feel are the main lessons you learned from RuneScape which you took into account when working on MechScape?
Adam: Since launching RuneScape HD last summer our technology team has been hard at work developing the game engine. Players can expect to see an extremely different looking game to RuneScape.

5) Could you please explain the gameplay of MechScape in detail? As of now you may only walk around in RuneScape by using your mouse, and leveling up is very tedious. Will MechScape have more advanced user controls?
Adam: Levelling in MMO’s can be tedious and some games make levelling difficult in an attempt to cover for a lack of content. We are approaching game design in a totally new way, player progression will be unlike any other MMO currently on the market and we are sure that you and the other MechScape world followers will love it.

7) Let’s talk character and “vehicle” design. How customizable will characters and vehicles be?
Adam: We are proud of our character customisation in all our games and we think that we will offer gamers a very wide variety of customisation for their characters which we will continue to focus on in all our future products.

MechScape will likely have higher system requirements

The MechScape system requirements will be higher than the requirements from RuneScape. This has been confirmed by Mod MMG in a recent question asked by Ren from MechScape World.

Ren:
“Any idea bout the minimum specs for Mechscape… Similar to Runescape?”

Mod MMG:
“We haven’t locked down the final spec yet but we are using more polygons”
“I expect mechscape will be a higher spec than Runescape”

This should not come as a suprise since RuneScape 2 was released on the 17 March 2004 and was made for the internet speeds and computer at that time. 5 years later it seems reasonable that players can cope with the higher system requirements.

Welcome to MechTower

Hey everyone, welcome to MechTower. This is a project started by me (Joost) from RuneTower. I’m the founder of RuneTower and started the site about 4 years ago. Now with MechScape coming we’ll also be providing information for this new game by Jagex. When MechScape comes out we will be providing you with guides, tips and a community forum. At the moment we do not have a forum for MechTower but you can use the RuneTower forums at this time. From this moment on we will keep you updated with the latest MechScape news and rumours.

I would also like to point you to MechScape World who first discovered this secret project by Jagex. Ren’s website has the whole story behind the discorvery of MechScape and has official concept art of MechScape given to him by Jagex.
